Antisepsis and Women in Surgery: Transitions in Eakins Clinic Masterpieces
To use Eakins’s paintings, the Gross Clinic and the Agnew Clinic, as landmarks in two great transitions in surgery, antiseptic surgery and the entry of women in surgery;
To examine the lives of the subjects of the paintings, Samuel Gross and D. Hayes Agnew, and show how their accomplishments set the stage for important trends in surgery: scholarship in academic surgery through elite professional societies, and the practice of medicine in the public sphere;
To examine the life of the artist, Thomas Eakins, and demonstrate how surgeons came to be the subjects of two of his greatest works.
