SHH Pediatric Grand Rounds

Speaker: Faryal Munir, MD, PGY-2 Objectives: At the conclusion, the participant should be able to:

1) DEFINE "pain" and DISCUSS types of pain experienced in SCD; 2) DISCUSS pathophysiology of pain in SCD; 3) DIFFERENTIATE between acute, chronic, and acute on chronic pain in SCD; 4) DESCRIBE guidelines for the emergency evaluation and treatment of pain in children with SCD; 5) HIGHLIGHT myths regarding effective pain management among care providers; 6) HIGHLIGHT differences between Opioid tolerance and Opioid addiction in pediatric patients with SCD; 7) SUGGEST effective approaches for partnership with ED providers, nurses, Heme/Onc physicians, palliative care teams, and administration to improve care; 8) DISCUSS the newer recommended approach of using intranasal Fentanyl for acute VOC. Questions and answers will allow for audience participation.
