As a result of participating in this workshop, participants should:
Knowledge
• Recognize when and why a patient education handout would be needed.
• Name several subscription web services from which the library subscribe to patient education resources: MDConsult, Epocrates, Health and Wellness Center
• Name several free online resources for patient education materials which might include MedlinePlus, Healthfinder.gov, FamilyDoctor.org, ACOG, AAP, ADA.
• List several considerations for using a handout with a certain patient which might include the language, reading level, demand management value, the design, use of images, and cultural considerations.
• Identify a method for determining the reading level of a handout.
• Teach medical students to education patients.
Skills
• Find a patient education handout online.
• Modify the handout and print it out.
• Determine the reading level of a handout
• Translate a handout to another language
Attitudes
• Appreciate the value of a handout to improve a patient’s satisfaction as well as compliance with instructions
• Appreciate that patients do not always remember nor understand the instructions which a physician provides verbally for a variety of reasons.
