NFO Business of Medicine Web Series: Workplace Violence in Healthcare – Awareness, Prevention, and Response

Workplace Violence

Violence against healthcare workers is an unfortunate and widespread reality. It can occur in any geographic location and any type of facility — and it can affect practitioners, administrative staff, patients, and families/caregivers. In this program, participants will explore the realities of workplace violence in healthcare and learn how to identify behaviors of concern, respond to escalating situations, navigate reporting expectations, and support prevention efforts within their organizations. At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: 1. Define workplace violence and recognize behaviors of concern, including threats, intimidation, and disruptive conduct. 2. Identify common risk factors and high‑risk environments associated with workplace violence in healthcare settings. 3. Understand de‑escalation strategies and the importance of using appropriate responses when addressing concerning behavior. 4. Describe key prevention strategies, such as environmental design, administrative controls, training, and hazard vulnerability assessments (HVAs). 5. Explain appropriate response and recovery actions for violent events, including reporting, documentation, staff support, and continuous improvement.
