FCOM 2024 – The ABC’s of Office Based Surgery

Office Surgery Safety

The movement of healthcare services away from traditional facilities to outpatient settings has escalated the volume of surgery (including invasive procedures) being performed in the Otolaryngology offices. This trend will continue due to physician preference, time savings, patient convenience and cost efficiency. While, the vast majority of these services are provided in a safe and effective manner, the complexity of services and procedures being performed in practitioners’ offices is increasing at unprecedented levels. To promote increased patient care quality and safety in office-based surgery practices the Otolaryngologist must develop and adopt specific guidelines. Such as, anesthesia, pre- and post-surgical evaluation, monitoring equipment, informed consent and emergency protocols. 1. Develop safety guidelines, policies and procedures for office-based surgery. 2. Establish a criterion for patient selection 3. Describe the added value, risk and benefits of new equipment in the market 4. Train the office staff timely and adopt a rigorous performance improvement program 5. Establish a cost-effective strategy with vast and growing number of surgical disposables 6. Demonstrate samples of common, effective office-based airway procedures
