Florida Combined Otolaryngology Meeting 2024 – Cultural Intelligence: Breaking Down Barriers in Patient Communication

This workshop session is designed to customize a practical discussion on cultural intelligence for the health care provider. This session will differ from other educational DEI sessions, as a primary focus will be on including disease states as an interconnecting variable. The aim of this session is to identify and overcome points of provider-patient communication breakdown in order to enhance the patient-provider relationship and effectiveness. After attending, participants will be able to: 1. Define and distinguish between cultural competence and cultural humility 2. Identify various components that make up one’s cultural identity 3. Discuss and recognize intrinsic and extrinsic bias in yourself and others, with a focus on disease states 4. Discuss attitudes and bias of healthcare providers and patients that can interfere with treatment 5. Practice methods to overcome bias in order to more effectively communicate with patients, caregivers and colleagues
