Evidence-Based Medicine

Participant Learning Objectives: Knowledge • Define evidence based medicine incorporating patient values with clinical experience and current best research • Describe levels of evidence, and at least two models of LOE • Distinguish between meta-analysis, systematic reviews, review articles, and original research articles in terms of rigor • Describe the five step model of practicing evidence based medicine • Describe the concept of drilling down to find the best answers to clinical questions quickly • Relate the practice of EBM to lifelong learning • Describe the Cochrane collaboration/library and a systematic review • Define POEM and describe an Info POEM • List several EBM subscription databases and tools • Define clinical practice guideline Skills • Translate a clinical scenario into a PICO formatted clinical question • Use quality resources and databases to seek out answers to the clinical question to include: -Essential Evidence Plus (PDA and Web) -Clinical Evidence (PDA and Web) -DynaMed (PDA and Web) -National Guidelines Clearinghouse (web) ACP PIER (web) -Cochrane, ACP Journal Club and DARE in OVID
