SUMMARY:Updates on the ENT-Medical Audiology Approach to Tinnitus
DESCRIPTION:Tinnitus distress affects millions of people in the US. Although tinnitus is not a curable condition\, it is a very manageable ailment. There are multiple management protocols for tinnitus with a wide range of success. The current evidence-based practice supports the use of bimodal electrical stimulation\, sound therapy\, desensitization and habituation therapy as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as some common methods. Tinnitus in many cases can be a very disturbing condition. It may influence patients’ daily activities\, relationships\, sleep and well-being. This presentation will explore a variety of tinnitus management methods with an emphasis on a proposed audiological tinnitus management model. This model addresses tinnitus management at the three levels of Sensation\, Emotion and Cognition. The sensation level deals with the use of sound therapy and how to help the patients to take the edge off of the piercing sound that they perceive in their ears or head. The emotion part of the management plan incorporates techniques in reducing the emotional reaction to tinnitus and control of ANS response. The third level\, cognition\, discusses the techniques in dealing with negative thoughts. In this session\, we will explore the relationship between chronic diseases\, comorbidities related to hearing loss\, tinnitus\, and balance disorders\, and the role of pharmacological treatments in managing these conditions. \nThe session will begin with a quick overview of the most common chronic diseases associated with comorbidities related to hearing loss\, tinnitus\, and balance disorders\, including cardiovascular disease\, diabetes\, and neurological disorders. We will discuss the mechanisms through which these chronic diseases can contribute to these conditions and the importance of identifying and managing these conditions to optimize treatment outcomes. We will then explore the pharmacological treatments commonly used to manage chronic diseases with comorbidities related to auditory function. Participants will learn about the potential side effects and interactions of these medications\, and the strategies for managing them in patients with comorbidities. DESCRIPTION:A comprehensive course explaining the value that verification and validation measures bring to a busy clinic. The extra time it takes to complete verification and validation measures on the front end\, can actually save the clinician a significant amount of time and money later on. With the use of trained support staff to assist with these procedures\, you can free up time for your clinicians to engage in more revenue generating activities. As patients obtain devices from other sources\, including directly from hearing aid manufacturers\, it will become more and more important for clinics to itemize and unbundle their services. Performing verification and validation measures will help to set clinics apart\, prepare clinicians for working with patients who have obtained their devices elsewhere\, and be a revenue generating stream beyond just offering hearing aids for sale. Verification and validation have long been touted as “best practice” in guidelines set forth by national organizations such as AAA\, and ASHA. With consumers and patients becoming increasingly aware of these issues due to grassroots education efforts\, and internet access\, we must elevate ourselves as clinicians\, and our practices as centers for Evidence Based Patient Centered Care. This will serve in dual purpose in advancing our bottom lines\, and our online reputation (which is an increasingly important factor in patient selection of medical providers). \nParticipants will be able to:\nDiscuss different approaches hearing aid verification and validation.  Examine the potential for revenue growth that HA verifications can bring to an audiology practice.  Describe operational efficiencies and time-saving benefits derived from implementing HA verifications as a standard part of the practice workflow.
