SUMMARY:Multimorbodity and Auditory Health: An Introduction
DESCRIPTION:The prevalence of hearing loss increases as a function of age. Approximately 65% of the population aged 71 years and older and almost the entire population (96%) of those aged 90 years and above experience some degree of hearing loss. Given the increasing number of Americans living into their 9th and 10th decades of life\, the problems associated with age-related hearing loss (ARHL) will represent a significant public health challenge for decades to come. In addition to the communication and quality of life consequences of hearing loss\, ARHL has increasingly been found to be associated with a constellation of secondary physiologic\, functional\, and psychosocial conditions. The goal of this presentation is to provide participants with a broad understanding of the association between multimorbidity and auditory health to include cardiovascular disease\, diabetes\, cognitive dysfunction\, depression\, social isolation\, falls\, healthcare utilization\, and mortality. A discussion of epidemiological research design\, levels of research evidence\, and the terminology commonly associated with the multimorbidity literature as it relates to ARHL will be presented to better prepare participants to understand and interpret an ever-expanding literature. \nAt the conclusion of this presentation\, participants will be able to:\nDescribe the burden of chronic diseases in the US elderly population;\nIdentify four conditions frequently associated with age-related hearing loss;\nDescribe the major differences among various levels of research evidence.

SUMMARY:The Balancing Act of Chronic Disease\, Dizziness & Falls
DESCRIPTION:Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for Americans\, often leading to loss of independence and quality of life. One-third of older adults fall annually\, creating a significant strain on the medical economic system of the United States and costing an estimated 34 billion dollars annually to cover the direct medical expenses and hospitalizations. This has led to a significant multidisciplinary interest in modifying risk factors for falling in the population of older adults. This presentation will provide an overview of those common age-based medical co-morbidities\, both otologic and non-otologic which play a significant role and their interaction in falling among older adults. A review of neurodiagnostic tests which have high sensitivity\, diagnostic efficiency\, and predictive value in proper identification of high-risk individual will be presented. In addition\, intervention strategies both with therapeutic protocols including vestibular rehabilitation and balance retraining strategies as well as life-style accommodations will be discussed. \nBy the end of the session\, attendees will be able to:\n1. Describe the latest advances and technologies in the field of neuromodulation. They will comprehend the various neuromodulation techniques and their respective clinical applications.\n2. Analyze the benefits and potential risks associated with different neuromodulation techniques. They will also gain the ability to dissect research findings and their impact on current clinical practices.\n3. Evaluate the potential impact of these advancements on patient care and the overall field of neuromodulation. They will also have the knowledge to assess the future directions of neuromodulation research based on current trends and developments.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Link Between Diabetes\, Pharmacology and Auditory Comorbidities
DESCRIPTION:This one-hour conference session\, “Exploring the Link Between Diabetes and Auditory Comorbidities: A Multidisciplinary Approach\,” is designed to provide physicians\, audiologists\, and mid-level providers with a comprehensive understanding of the connection between diabetes and related auditory disorders. The session will highlight the latest research findings\, diagnostic tools\, and best practices for managing patients with diabetes who experience auditory comorbidities. The collaborative focus of this course will promote interdisciplinary communication and enhance the quality of care provided to this patient population. \nAttendees will be able to:\nReview the prevalence and epidemiology of auditory comorbidities in individuals with diabetes.\nDiscuss the underlying pathophysiology and risk factors associated with diabetes.\nDiscuss the clinical implications and challenges of managing patients with both diabetes and auditory comorbidities.\nDemonstrate the utility of a multidisciplinary approach for optimal patient care.\nReview the latest advancements in diagnostic tools and treatment strategies for diabetes.

SUMMARY:To Implant or Not to Implant: Interactive Case Study Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Cochlear implantation candidacy continues to evolve. Patients with varying hearing loss configurations are being implanted. These include those with significant residual hearing on the ear to be implanted and also those with normal hearing on the contralateral ear. Additionally\, Medicare recently expanded their criteria to include those with higher speech understanding (from 40% correct to 60% correct). As a result of these recent changes\, this session will introduce case studies to talk about who is a candidate and who is not a candidate based upon the most recent guidelines. This session will be designed to decrease confusion about candidacy and improve the referral pathway. \nBy the end of this session\, participants will be able to:\nDescribe changes in candidacy guidelines for cochlear implantation\nDescribe recently introduced technologies that are improving surgical outcomes for cochlear implant recipients\nDescribe guidelines for patient CI evaluation referrals

SUMMARY:Updates on the ENT-Medical Audiology Approach to Tinnitus
DESCRIPTION:Tinnitus distress affects millions of people in the US. Although tinnitus is not a curable condition\, it is a very manageable ailment. There are multiple management protocols for tinnitus with a wide range of success. The current evidence-based practice supports the use of bimodal electrical stimulation\, sound therapy\, desensitization and habituation therapy as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as some common methods. Tinnitus in many cases can be a very disturbing condition. It may influence patients’ daily activities\, relationships\, sleep and well-being. This presentation will explore a variety of tinnitus management methods with an emphasis on a proposed audiological tinnitus management model. This model addresses tinnitus management at the three levels of Sensation\, Emotion and Cognition. The sensation level deals with the use of sound therapy and how to help the patients to take the edge off of the piercing sound that they perceive in their ears or head. The emotion part of the management plan incorporates techniques in reducing the emotional reaction to tinnitus and control of ANS response. The third level\, cognition\, discusses the techniques in dealing with negative thoughts. This presentation will also include our current research and some case studies. \nAfter attending this presentation\, participants will be able to…\n1. explore management strategies for tinnitus\n2. explain the role of sensation\, emotion and cognition in tinnitus management\n3. describe the audiological management of tinnitus
