SUMMARY:Otoacoustic Emissions and Hidden Hearing Loss
DESCRIPTION:While the audiogram is a widely used diagnostic tool\, it is a poor representation of a person’s underlying otopathology and can therefore be a poor predictor of a person’s hearing impairment. For example\, persons with audiometric thresholds within normal limits may experience hearing impairment such as difficulty hearing in noise. Cochlear synaptopathy and outer hair cell dysfunction are two otopathologies undetected by the standard audiogram (a.k.a. Hidden Hearing Loss)\, but outer hair cell function plays a primary role in hearing in noise performance. A third undetected otopathology is cochlear untuning\, which occurs secondary to outer hair cell damage. This talk will discuss each of these otopathologies and present clinical normative data that can be used to differentially diagnose each otopathology. \nThe attendees will be able to:\n1. Identify three forms of otopathologies from an audiogram\n2. Distinguish between cochlear synaptopathy\, outer hair cell dysfunction\, and cochlear untuning\n3. Discuss the correlations between outer hair cell function\, hearing in noise performance\, and audiometric thresholds

SUMMARY:Genetic Case Studies
DESCRIPTION:Genetic etiologies are the most common cause of pre-lingual hearing loss and deafness. Identification of a genetic diagnosis of hearing loss allows for tailored medical and audiological management as well as genetic counseling. In this session\, two genetic case studies will be presented by interdisciplinary teams including otolaryngologists\, mid-level providers\, and genetic counselors. Presenters will describe the characteristics of the genetic diagnoses as well as implications for treatment and management of these patients. \nThe audience will see two case studies:\n1. The first case is a six-year-old male who recently underwent cholesteatoma surgery. A complicated case in that this patient had a congenital cholesteatoma and stigmata of branchiotorenal syndrome. Of great interest\, the patient’s mother had the same findings. This is an extremely rare case and likely represents an inherited condition.\n2. The second case reviews the early genetic diagnosis of DFNX2 hearing loss which was critical in subsequent management and counseling of the patient and family. \n  \n\n\n\nThe attendees will be able to:\n1. Describe the characteristics of BOR syndrome.\n2. Develop a diagnosis and treatment plan for patients exhibiting signs and symptoms of BOR syndrome.\n3. Summarize key features of DFNX2 (POU3F4-related hearing loss) and impact on surgical management\, audiologic habilitation\, and family counseling.\n4. Illustrate interdisciplinary approach to caring for patient with genetic diagnosis of hearing loss.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Advances in the Treatment of the Aging Face
DESCRIPTION:Facial rejuvenation has evolved over many years with techniques that aim to restore youthfulness. In the past the concept of facial rejuvenation was dominated by invasive surgical procedures\, such as facelifts\, browlifts\, and blepharoplasty to name a few. In recent years there has been a trend toward pre-juvenation over rejuvenation and with that procedures that require less down time for patients to return to their daily lives. Often this requires a combination of different techniques and individualized treatment plans to provide the best possible outcomes. Here we will discuss a myriad of different minimally invasive advances in the treatment of the aging face that are meant to provide patients with long lasting and natural results \n“After this session\, attendees will be able to:\n1. Discuss the different types of neurotoxins and its applications toward both younger and older populations\n2. Describe different types of fillers and its uses toward the aging face\n3. List skin care regiments that all patients should be on as part of their treatment for the aging face”

SUMMARY:Genetics of Hearing Loss: Core Concepts\, Communication\, and Collaborative Care
DESCRIPTION:Genetic etiologies play a substantial role in hearing loss and deafness\, with the majority of pre-lingual hearing loss (HL) due to an underlying genetic cause. Identification of a genetic diagnosis of HL drives tailored medical\, audiologic\, and psychosocial care for persons with HL and their families. With increasing knowledge of genetic etiologies of HL\, audiologists play a crucial role in the incorporation of genetics into care of persons with HL and their families. In this session\, attendees will learn approachable and relevant information on genetics of HL from a board-certified genetic counselor with expertise in HL and deafness. Be ready to build your knowledge of genetics and HL\, increase your confidence in communicating with patients and providers about genetics\, and identify ways to incorporate genetic information into your audiology practice through collaborative care. \n“After attending this activity\, attendees will be able to:\n• Summarize current understanding of genetic etiologies of hearing loss including syndromic and non-syndromic forms.\n• Describe the process of genetic evaluation including genetic testing for hearing loss to address patient/family questions and concerns.\n• Recognize the role of genetic testing for hearing loss and illustrate ways to incorporate genetics into audiology practice using case examples. “
